Coach Tyrell Smith is the Head Varsity Coach at Douglas County High School. He was hired in 2018 by ex-NBA player and past Douglas County coach, Earl Boykins, to be the sophomore coach. In 2019, Tyrell was promoted to Head Varsity Assistant Coach under Coach Clayton Comstock. In 2021, the team made it to the Elite 8 in the state tournament, which was the furthest the school has ever been. 2022 began a new journey, as Coach Tyrell was promoted to Head Varsity Coach after Coach Comstock stepped down. Coach Tyrell has led the program to back-to-back state tournament appearances and is looking to continue to build and grow the program.
Tyrell, who is a Yonkers, New York native, moved to Georgia in high school. He realized playing at the next level was not going to be in the cards, but his passion for playing was directed into training and coaching kids. Coach Tyrell began coaching and training while in high school. While attending Langston University in Oklahoma, coach Tyrell was asked to assist the women's basketball team as a student trainer under Coach Tony Greene. After college, Tyrell moved to Colorado with his soon to be wife, Da'Janai Smith, and now three kids, Tyson, Alayah and Amiyah.
Coach Tyrell began coaching and training basketball in Colorado in 2013 with various programs and players. In 2018, while coaching at Douglas County High School, Coach Tyrell started his own club program called Prolific Elite. The club won their very first tournament and showed a glimpse of what was to come. From 2018 to 2024, the program became one of the top programs in Colorado. In 2024, Coach Tyrell merged his Prolific Elite program with Tru Colorado and is looking forward to amazing things to come.
